Extended Deadline For Filing Income Tax Returns Ends Today

The extended deadline for individual taxpayers to file their income tax returns (ITR) ends today i.e. January 10, 2021. The government has extended the deadline for filing returns multiple times in the past so as to provide relief to taxpayers amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The original deadline for filing ITRs was July 31, 2002. The deadline was first extended to November 30, 2020 and thereafter to December 31, 2020. The government has also extended the due date for filing declaration under the direct tax dispute resolution scheme Vivad Se Vishwas by a month till January 31. The last date for filing GST annual return for 2019-20 fiscal has been taken forward by two months, until February 28, 2021.

Here's a step-by-step guide tn file your income tax returns:

Visit the income tax department's portal

Access the income tax portal at www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. Register yourself by using your permanent account number (PAN). Your PAN will be your user ID. If already registered yourself, click on 'Log in here' on the website

Login

Click on the e-file option or the "Income Tax Return" link. Select the correct assessment year, ITR form number, the filing type as 'original/revised return', the submission mode as 'prepare and submit online' and click on 'Continue'.

Fill details, compute the tax

Read the instructions and fill in all the mandatory details in the form. Calculate the final tax payable and then proceed.

Preview the form

After calculating the tax, confirm all the tabs of the ITR form. Select the correct verification option in the 'taxes paid and verification' tab. Click on 'preview and submit'

Verify ITR

Verify returns using the Electronic Verification Code (EVC) or Aadhaar OTP or digital signature certificate.

Submit the income tax returns

Enter the EVC or the OTP received on your mobile number within one minute.
