Auto Sales In May 2024 Live: Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai Clock Muted Numbers

- Total vehicle sales at 3.55 lakh units, flat YoY

Total sales of Hero MotoCorp Ltd. fell last month as a scorching summer wilted sales at India's largest two-wheeler maker.

In May 2024,

• Motorcycle sales fell 3.71% YoY to 4,71,186 units.

• Scooter sales fell 10.6% YoY to 26,937 units.

• Exports rose 67.24% YoY to 18,673 units.

In the first two months of Fiscal 2025, Hero MotoCorp has sold 10,31,708 units as against 9,15,581 units in the year-ago period, registering a growth of 12.6% year-on-year.

Sales of Royal Enfield plunged nearly 10% from the year earlier as its 350 cc range of motorcycles found fewer takers.

In May 2024, the motorcycling unit of Eicher Motors Ltd. sold 71,010 units in India, as against 77,461 units a year ago—a decline of 8% year-on-year, according to an exchange filing on Saturday.

• Sales of models with engine capacity up to 350 cc fell 13% year-on-year to 59,852 units, as against 69,038 units a year ealier.

• Sales of models with engine capacity exceeding 350 cc surged 32% year-on-year to 11,158 units on the back of the new Himalayan 450.

• In international markets, Royal Enfield sold 7,479 units—12% higher than the 6,666 sold in the corresponding period a year ago.

The gains were still not enough to arrest the slide in volumes.

Total domestic sales of Tata Motors Ltd. rose 2% year-on-year to 75,173 units in May 2024, as against 73,448 units in the year-ago period, according to an exchange filing on Saturday.

Kia India Pvt. Ltd. has reported 3.9% year-on-year growth in May 2024 to sell 19,500 units in the domestic market. At the same time, the company achieved an exports milestone of 2.5 lakh units since inception in 2017.

• ⁠Local sales rose 3.9% YoY at 19,500 units vs 18,766 units in May 2023.

• Exports stood at 2,304 units in May 2024.

• Production capacity stood at 21,804 units in May 2024.

Total sales of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. fell in May 2024, due to a slump in exports, according to an exchange filing on Saturday.

• Total sales fell 2% YoY to 1.74 lakh units vs 1.78 lakh units.

• Domestic sales up 4% YoY to 1.57 lakh units vs 1.51 lakh units.

• ⁠Exports down 34% YoY to 17,367 units vs 26,477 units.

Total sales of TVS Motor Co. rose 12% year-on-year to 3,69,914 units in May 2024, as against 3,30,609 units a year earlier, on the back of a surge in exports—up 27% year-on-year to 96,966 units.

Total two-wheeler sales rose 13% year-on-year to 3,59,590 units, as against 3,19,295 units in the year-ago period.

• Domestic two-wheeler sales up 7% YoY at 271,140 units.

• Exports of two-wheelers rose 33% YoY to 88,450 units.

• Motorcycle sales rose 7% YoY to 1,73,627 units in May 2024.

• Scooter sales rose 20% YoY to 1,45,305 units in May 2024.

• EV sales rose 4% YoY to 18,674 units in May 2024.

• Three-wheeler sales fell 8.75% YoY to 10,324 units in May 2024.

Domestic sales of Hyundai Motor India Pvt. rose marginally in May 2024, even as exports jumped.

• Local sales up 1.13% YoY at 49,151 units vs 48,601 units in May 2023.

• Exports rose 31% YoY at 14,400 units vs 11,000 in May 2023.

• Total sales up 6.63% at 63,551 units vs 59,601 units in May 2023.

“We have maintained a healthy total sales volume in May 2024, despite a week-long routine bi-annual maintenance shutdown at our Sriperumbudur factory," Tarun Garg, chief operating officer at Hyundai Motor India, said in a media statement. "SUVs continue to be a growth driver, accounting for more than 67% of domestic sales last month. Our rural penetration stood at a healthy 20.1% in May."

So far this year, Hyundai India has seen its domestic sales grow 5.55% year-on-year to 2,59,669 units. Its exports rose 15% to 61,300 units over the same time.

Tractor sales of Escorts Kubota Ltd. fell 6.1% year-on-year to 8,612 units in May 2024. The company had sold 9,167 tractors in the year-ago period.

• Total sales down 6.1% YoY to 8,612 units vs 9,167 units.

• Exports down 17.9% YoY to 380 units vs 463 units.

The company attributed the decline in sales to myriad reasons, not limited to cyclicality seen in the commercial-vehicle space.

The ongoing elections, low water levels in reservoirs, and reduced haulage in certain regions of the country due to heatwaves impacted sentiments on the ground, Escorts Kubota said in an exchange filing.

"However, with the forecast of a near- to above-normal monsoon this year, we anticipate an improvement in demand and industry performance post southwest monsoon."

Car sales at Toyota Kirloskar India Pvt. surged 24% year-on-year to 25,273 units in May 2024, according to a statement on Saturday.

• Overall sales up 24% YoY at 25,273 units.

• Local sales stood at 23,959 units.

• Exports stood at 1,314 units.

• Year-to-date, sales rose 23% YoY to 1,22,776 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.'s overall auto sales in May 2024 stood at 71,682 vehicles, a growth of 17%, including exports.

In the utility vehicles segment, M&M sold 43,218 vehicles in the domestic market, a growth of 31% and overall, 44,283 vehicles, including exports. Domestic sale for commercial vehicles stood at 19,826.
