If the privileged don’t stand for people in poverty, no one else is going to take responsibility, says Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

The world has 2,153 billionaires with a net worth of more than $10 trillion, according to a recent Oxfam report. If all these billionaires donate at least 4-5 percent of their annual incomes to charities—something Bill and Melinda Gates do—the world would have more than enough money to meet its sustainable development goals.

That’s according to Priyanka Chopra Jonas, ambassador at Global Citizen, and Hugh Evans, founder and chief executive officer at the non-profit. The duo were part of a panel hosted by Bloomberg on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

“If the privileged don’t stand for people in poverty, no one else is going to take responsibility,” Chopra said, imploring the high net worth individuals to support the cause of eradicating extreme poverty.

Global Citizen—a non-profit founded in 2008—aims to end extreme poverty by 2030. That’s also one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, agreed upon by all the United Nations member states in 2015.

“The gap that we have right now is $350 billion per year. That’s what we need to eradicate extreme poverty. Not just poverty, extreme poverty, which is people living under $1.90 a day,” she said.

“If everyone is as generous as Bill and Melinda Gates, that’s enough,” Evans said.
